New, Fantasy Writers Practice Group - Seeking Members for Weekly Critiques

Wrensul

Dreamer
Hello, potentially interested parties of Mythic Scribes.

As I continue to develop better writing habits, gaining and giving feedback must become a regular part of my life.

The Fantasy Writers Practice Group is my solution to accountability that I believe will not be overwhelming for us busy folks.

Three of my friends have expressed interest in joining.
I also plan to invite peers from workshops that I am participating in.
That invite is now extended to this community.

We’re launching on April 2nd. First entires will be due on April 8th.

This is an entirely free group, the simple bones of which I (Wrensul) am in charge of handling.
Feel free to jump in at any time if you can’t get started with us on the first week.
But, if you miss more than a week, you’ll be kicked out. :3 (Unless arranged prior).

The idea is thus: follow a prompt, submit (never more than a page of writing), review someone else’s work, and see critiques come in on your own piece.
All done in Google Docs. This document will be the group’s hub.

Please review the rules. If you want to join, just message me with a link to your first entry. From that point on, you’ll use email for submissions.
Message me with questions, or post them in this thread.

I’m starting us off with a majority of exercises from The 3AM Epiphany by Brian Kiteley.
I encourage you to snag a copy. What activities I borrow from it will be edited down. If you want full insights, you’re on your own.

I’ve given myself an added stipulation. Each of my submissions will be set in the world of Parsk.
Feel free to follow the equivalent with your own precious concept-children.
Or, feel free to make each of your entries irrelevant to the previous.

Rules:

General -
. You will need a Google account to join. We will use Google Docs for submissions and comments.
. You must understand and communicate in English effectively.
. I (Wrensul) will never directly share your account information with anyone.
. Members will be invited from several social sources. Use a Google account that you feel comfortable presenting in a semi-public space.
. Be aware, Mythic Scribes is not responsible for managing or moderating this group.
. Group rules may be updated when necessary. Members will be notified of significant changes.
. If you are worried about document storage, check out Google’s plans. A plan is NOT required to participate.
. All submissions remain the sole property of their creators.
. Participation does not transfer or grant publication rights to the group, its organizer, or its members.
. Do not copy, repost, distribute, adapt, or use another member’s work outside group-related discussion without the creator’s explicit permission.
. Do not use another member’s characters, settings, plots, or distinctive ideas in your own work without permission.
. Writers may publish, revise, submit, remove, or otherwise use their own work however they choose.

Prompts -
. A new prompt will be posted no later than Monday of each participation week.
. Prompts will be designed deliberately for short flash-fiction responses
. To suggest a prompt for a future week, use the submission form found on the hub document. (I have prompts for the remaining 21 weeks of 2026, but none yet for 2027).

Submitting -

. Please follow this submission template.
. Be sure to set your document to “Anyone with the link” and allow comments.
. Fantasy is this group’s primary focus, but all (forum appropriate) sub-genres of fiction are welcome.
. Submissions are due each Saturday.
. You may submit early, but submissions will not be posted for critique until the submission deadline.
. Without advance notice, each member may miss one submission per calendar year.
. As needed, planned absences may be scheduled.
. Missed submissions caused by emergencies may be excused at the organizer’s discretion.
. Members will be quietly and politely removed from the group after a second missed submission.
. Removed members may request to rejoin at the beginning of the next calendar year, subject to the same rules.
. After receiving comments, make revisions in your own private copy rather than replacing the original submission.
. Submissions generated in any part by AI will be denied. You are the one that is here to learn, not the robots!

Conduct and Commenting -
. All Mythic Scribes forum rules apply.
. Be honest, respectful, and ultimately encouraging. If you do not like all or part of a submission, benefit the creator with your clearest insight. Be sincere. Be careful. Remember that this group is open to beginners.
. Do not make personal comments, or take comments personally.
. If your conduct with other members becomes inappropriate, you will be quietly removed and permanently banned from the project.
. Members who repeatedly submit work without offering critiques may be removed from the group.
. Links to active members’ submissions may remain available indefinitely for viewing and commenting.
. A member may ask for their links to be removed at any time. Members may also remove access to their files through their own Google account.
. Extended discussions may be continued privately or opened on other social media at each member’s discretion.
. Letter grades, numerical scores, and ratings (A+, D-, 7/10, three stars, etc.) are not allowed unless a writer specifically requests them.
. Do not share submission links with anyone outside the group without the permission of the document author.
