New to writing communities

Hello everyone,

I've been writing stories for years now, but I'm finally ready to take the next step and draft a book with the intent to publish it. I'm 28,000 words in the first draft of the first book of a science fantasy series (man, if that mouthful doesn't tell you how deeply I've dug myself). Jokes aside, I've been looking for a place to share thoughts with fellow writers, ask burning questions I've had while writing my first draft, and just engage with a community that shares my interest in fantasy, science fiction, and writing. I think Mythic Scribes is a good fit.

I enjoy character driven stories, and I think this is reflected clearly in my writing. Worldbuilding is great, and creating secondary worlds is a favorite part of my brainstorming phase. I am very much a plotter, but I do like to discovery write chapters after a brief outline. My greatest struggle is setting description (to the point that it will be the focus of one of my edits).

Hopefully you'll see me around (if I haven't chickened out of the idea of posting things online). I'm not too big on social media, which is probably a bad thing for an aspiring author, but I think this is a good starting point.

Greetings, and welcome, Journey!

Sounds like your project is off to a good start.

This site had been a good place to share and compare experiences, and to ask for opinions on a wide array of topics. Take your time exploring. I hope you find the place useful.

Howdy Journey, Welcome Here.

The quickest advise I can give on description is look for the rule of three, and apply. You'd be surprised how well it works.

I’ve seen a lot of advice online, but I can’t say I’ve come across the rule of three, at least not for writing, but it makes sense. I already learned something new, so thanks!

The rule of three can be found in my words of wisdom, linked in my siggy.

Essentially it is that details are best delivered in threes. The tree was fat, prickly, and covered in snow... <--three hits at the descriptions and then stop.
