Which do you prefer to read, past tense or present tense? Which do you prefer to write?
("It depends" is not an answer by itself. What does it depend on? Short story versus novel? First person versus third?)
My own answer: I dislike present-tense writing most of the time, and I do not use it myself. I have seen it used to good effect for short passages, such as the way Charles de Lint uses it in dream sequences and such, but for the entire story, especially a novel... No. I will put up with it if something else about the story is very interesting to me, but I will enjoy the story a lot less because of the present-tense narration.
