In my fantasy universe there is a pantheon of dragons who created the universe rather than gods, but there are gods in my world. These gods are refugees from an alternate universe where they were the creators.
In my story I adopt the idea of tulpas, which if you don’t know are beings brought into existence by collective belief. I take this concept beyond the creation of beings and apply it to power as well. If enough people believe that something is powerful then it becomes powerful. In this alternate universe of gods there is a mortal, who is directly inspired by Gorr the god butcher from Thor, who becomes disillusioned with the gods because the gods are selfish and neglectful of their people and world. The gods are obsessed with personal gain and pleasure, and they deplete the world of its valuable and finite resources. He goes on a campaign of making people stop believing in the gods’ power, making them less powerful, and convinces people to believe that he has supernatural powers. After he has gained the power of a god he starts culling the gods, which leads them to searching for a way to escape his wrath.
Somehow (I don’t know how, maybe you can help me out here) they find out about the multiverse, and how to travel to a parallel universe. They come to my main universe with the dragon pantheon. They encounter one of the “Primordial Dragons” who recognizes that they are not mortal and asks what they are. They say that they are gods. The dragon asks “what is a god?” They explain that a god is a being of great power that plays a part in creation. The primordial dragon explains that they and their fellow primordial dragons are the beings of power and creation in this universe, and thus they are the “gods” of this world. These gods are then given the title Exarchs.
I of course welcome any feedback you may have, but my main reason in sharing this is to ask what domains do you think these refugee gods should have? In their universe there was a god for just about everything. But most of the gods died by the hands of the “god butcherer.”
So far I have 5 exarchs that I’ve started to develop. Here are their names and domains.
Moddah: motherhood/femininity
Deimos/Alon: twin exarchs of fear (they embody the two reactions to fear, fight or flight)
Pyrthum: fire & anger
Daikotes: Justice & balance
Mousi: stringed instruments
Further explanation of the gods/exarchs:
The gods are all one family that descends from an original patriarch and matriarch. The domains of the gods become more nuanced and minor the further you go down the family tree. The god of fire and anger would be a first generation child of the patriarch and matriarch. The god of stringed instruments would be like the great great great grandchild of the patriarch and matriarch.
