The Dragon Pantheon of Yvoria

Welcome to Yvoria! Or if you saw my last post, welcome back! Here I will go over the pantheon of dragons who each had a part in shaping the world. The first being to enter the universe and shape it was the Elder Dragon. Then came his counterpart, the purple mist. Together they created the 10 original dragon eggs, each holding in it an elemental domain, before disappearing. Those 10 primordial dragons hatched and dramatically changed the world. The 10 founders then had offspring with each other. Each time two founding dragon paired they created a set of twin eggs. Their offspring embodied new domains and elements that were offshoots/evolutions of their parents, along with this each of the twin dragons often balanced out their other sibling. Here is the genealogy of the ancient dragons along with their domain/element (feel free to skip over this if a list of names bores you!)

First generation/founders:

Gravion- gravity

Melodros- sound/frequency

Zephyros- air

Ignarion- magma

Aurelios- light

Aqualis- water

Terragon- stone

Ignisra- fire

Lunara- stars

Astrayx- dreams

Second generation:

Gravion+Melodros= Eryndor-time & Varynthos-multiverse

Terragon+Aqualis= Lythora-life & Yldra-decay

Lunara+Gravion= Sol-sun & Umbra-darkness

Ignisra+Ignarion= Valkrath-lava (a successor to Ignarion after Ignarion’s death) & Ashkaris- smoldering embers

Zephyros+Terragon= Sirozahn-sand & Levionis-architect of floating islands

Zephyros+Aqualis= Torrentis-rain & Nivoris-mist

Lunara+Terragon= Orvion-cosmic sculptor & Celmyara-cosmic painter

Third generation:

Aqualis+Umbra= Varyx-Ice & Abyzoth-deep ocean

Yldra+Umbra= Acridion-poison/disease & Mortophis-death

Ignisra+Torrentis= Drakmor-Lightning & Stratos-stillness

Ignisra+Terragon= Stellion-craftsmanship & Crysmir-crystals/alchemy

Lunara+Umbra= Noxaryx-keeper of the void & Erebos-keeper of the spectral moon

Lythora+Umbra= Savagore-beasts/the hunt & Sanguinoth-blood

Umbra+Ignisra= Cindrykuro-keeper of the black flame & Pyranthos-keeper of the rebirth flame

Umbra+Varynthos= Klytheon-eldritch dragon & Erisyr- chaos dragon

Umbra+Astrayx= Veythos-prophecy & Malphas- nightmares

Each dragon embodies a truth as well as an element. From this truth comes their unique philosophies and values. I won’t get into each one, but here’s an example. The turth at the center of Zephyros is movement and freedom. Zephyros is so free that they are male, female, or that which is in between based on how they feel at the moment. Zephyros believes that to be free is to live, to be confined is to die a little bit every moment. Zeohyros respects a person who works hard for their own freedom and who does not burden others. Zephyros slows their movement on rare occasions when taking a break will allow them move faster afterwards. If Zephyros could change one habit about mortals it would be the habit of doubting oneself as he sees this as a limiter on freedom that has no substance to it but what one gives it in their mind.

My goal with these dragons is for them to not be like mortals but for them to be relatable to mortals at the same time. Nearly every dragon comes into existence whole. By that I mean they don’t have personal wounds that are addressed over character arcs. I am trying to make them so that each is emotionally mature in their own way, and is a being worth aspiring to. Through this I’m trying to create the opposite of cosmic horror, what I call “cosmic wonder.” Cosmic wonder is the feeling that you are a speck of dust in a world of giants, but despite that, you can connect with those giants on a deep level.

In my universe these dragons often created their elements along with embodying them. Gravity did not exist before Gravion. Sound did not exist before Melodros. Such dragons are creators of their elements as well as agents of them. Then there are dragons like Mortophis and Acrodion. These dragons did not create death and disease, rather, death and disease were forces that did not obey any rules and thus were chaotic. Mortophis and Acridion came into the world to govern these powers.

That is an overview of how I’ve been creating my dragon pantheon. I hope you found it interesting! I have done a lot of work developing these individual dragons, so if you have any questions about then I may have an answer ready for you!
