Ask me about swords.

Sweet! I've had my eye on the "Munich" and "Talhoffer" over at Albion swords for years, but just can't justify the money until I get my girls through college. There's another in their "Museum" line I'd love, but they still haven't gotten to it from what I know. Trouble is, once I get the money for those toys, I'll probably end up buying period pieces with a higher collector value... Or none at all, because practicality will set in! Damn practicality. If I only I hadn't sold my Apple stocks. so many, many years ago...

I was medically retired from the Army prematurely a few months back, so I took what I've been saving for a true custom job from Tinker (who lives up the road a piece and has been my friend and sparring partner for nigh-on 30 years) and bought a Hanwei-Tinker GSOW from Kult of Athena on sale. The H/T swords have a takedown hex nut in the pommel. Once I've worked with it and decided what I like and don't, Tinker will do the custom work, which fits within my budget since, you know, I'm a pensioner now.

The Dao in that picture is the closest, but I cant call it that. That's too Chinese for my story. This would have come from a more tribal nation. I decided to make up a word. I think I will stick with it.

I tend in this direction. Name, describe it, run with it. Just don't trip, fall, and put an eye out.

I had been calling it a tulwar, but the pics on the internet of tulwars are way more curved and have different handles.

I found this pic :) which was labelled a tulwar. I may keep Tulwar. If I have cover art that shows it, that may end confusion.

The pics that come up for Tulwars make them look like very unwieldy and difficult swords to manage. Too much curve. For this one, the curves are for added leverage, and greater chopping power, not slashing and cavalry stuff.

BTW, the AI did know what a Mor Macil was (a question I had asked earlier), even had a 3d graphic of it. More than I expected.

Tulwars are like many swords with a wild variety. And sometimes the tulwars on the net look more like a shamshir with severe curves.

I think that this sword is heavy and in some situations where enemy attack swiftey like an assassin it may create a problem so i suggest that bastard sword or a short sword is better in some situations ......, Hehe nervous laughter

No doubt some swords are better in some situations than others, but you gotta fight with what you got. That is the sword he has. He's big. Weight wont matter.

I dont know that I have a fav, cause, like you said, they each have a use where they can be ideal, or less than ideal.

I tend to have straight blades in my story, but Axes are common, and I seem to like maces. Not too many curved swords.

For myself, I would probably most likely buy myself a long sword, if I was buying, But I could see owning more than one.

I'd not mind owning a Khopesh, and a Katana. But if I had only one, I go for the more sentimental choice.

I my story the way of the cubist....# free promotion ........mc or any other usually are able manifest any kind weapon they want with some restriction of course and.
I prefer this system has it flaw i cannot what is it

Where the blade is curved, and the haft curves down, kind of giving it both a cleaver and sword like capacity. But I was at a loss as to what to call it. A saber? A Scimitar? A falchion?
I personally think your best course of action is to pick a name that fits your setting more than it fits the sword. Even if you describe it in detail, few people will have this exact image in their head, and there will be plenty of readers who, after the description will simply think "sword". Having a name that fits your setting reinforces that setting.

One thing to keep in mind is that for most of the people actually wielding the sword, the thing was simply called sword (or local equivalent). All the different names we stick on them are relatively modern classifications we use to differentiate between the weapons. Which is why you can have a lot of debate about what kind of sword something actually is. But swords changed all the time. And it was rarely a big change. Rarely did a smith wake up and think "i'm going to create a completely new type of sword and I'll call it a rapier". Rather, swords got longer and thinner and more flexible as materials available and demands changed until you had something looking like what we consider a rapier. But there were lots of little steps in between.

Join the club. Being retired like that sucks. You get over it, even if it takes a bit to adjust to wholly civilian life.

Look forward to seeing a few photos of the finished item.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but all this time I didn't know you were in Sweden. My wife was a runner-up on Allt för Sverige some years back, Katie Malik. We've been there a lot since then.

:ROFLMAO:

Yes, wasn't that in 2014? I remember thinking the surname was unusual. Made it to the final if I remember correctly.
