Because Google and other search engines have designed their software to notice that the same material is posted in multiple locations and deliberately buries those webpages.

How much material does there have to be before this takes place? I would hope that quoting a famous document, like the Declaration of Independence, would not automatically sink your site. It does not seem to affect everything. Things like the AP have the same article posted at many different places.

Do you have any links to information on this policy? It would be nice to know more about it.

Sorry, continuing with the stupid questions- why do they do that? Is it just to keep people from making five hundred blogs and copying the same content to all of them in an effort to get as many hits as they can?
