Anybody around here watch the Anime?

I say 'the' because well, I mean the medium in General.
I used to watch it a lot but I stopped watching them at some point.
I'd like to get back into them to have something to watch. (if ya'll have suggestions)
But I have no idea what's new/good and I have no idea if any of ya'll know what I be yapping about lol

For the record: I don't care about how old/new it is, just needs to be of a moderate length, and maybe (fingers crossed) a proper ending. (I have seen so many short boy anime that don't reach their conclusions because of budget/other reasons )

I love a good mech anime, but I also like the classics (Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ etc)
I've seen a couple 'The MMO but Real' anime like Log Horizon but I haven't seen Sword art Online or .hack series. (Actually I seen a BIT of .hack)

I've seen a couple Rom Coms and at least one Slice of Life. Heck, I like Magical Girl ones too lol (those are more of a guilty pleasure)

Yeah, after being 'gone' from it for a while it's hard to know what's good or not.

Most anime choices do not attract me. I've have seen a fair number, but do not expect much from it. I think it has kind of hit it peak, so to speak. Its influence on culture is in decline. I'd be open if something super showed up, but I've not seen it for a while. Course, I feel that way about most stuff that has come out in the last 10 or so years. I am hard to please, I accept it.

Last anime I recall enjoying was probably Violet Evergarden. I watched that when I was home with cancer. Course, I watched just about everything that there was when I was stuck at home with cancer. I am not sure the release dates on most stuff. I think the most recently released one I liked was Cleavatas, but I feel it stepped on itself and just missed being super good.

Anyway....I am indifferent to most Anime, hostile to some, and enjoy some others. I'd like some of the ones I liked to have more coming, but it seems they are not in production anymore.

I feel like the last good Anime was GITS Arise. There are plenty of reasons to farm the decade after the milenium, but the audience has lost interest since Netflicks worked their magic. Stuff like Black Lagoon and Fruits Basket make it, even Invader Zim nowadays. There are most popular examples, being Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist, who seem raw on the power of tongue in cheek for a lot of their gags. Though fighting style is relentless, and does not have the digital aged edge.

So, for me personally, I am not sold on recent incarnations of anime for those reasons. They are all niche and clique, for an audience that is either growing up or wallowing in senility. The choices are most numerous than they used to be, and it has evolved from Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion, to something more like Sword Art Online and Parasyte the Maxim, and further doldrums from there, being an avant guard medium not anything super punchy and an acquired taste like a corporate hell.

I think the main problem with anime right now.
A lot of them are 'grasping at straws' to find whatever bottled lightning made DBZ/Naruto/FMA/Bleach work. instead of doing their own thing.

Anime in all genres seems to have lost a bit of the 'magic' (I agree with Pmming on this aspect) and I think the industry/audience feels that.
What's funny is that those smaller 'no name' ones can sometimes be good.

I watched Asobi Ni Ikku Yo on a whim ages ago (Mostly because catgirls but the summary sounded funny) and quite enjoyed it. It was very self aware of what it was and didn't care, it told the story it wanted to tell. If I remember right, it even makes a few self aware jabs at itself a couple of times.

Anime does get better the further back you go. Stuff like the black and white Astro Boy still holds up.

They need to stop 'copying what's good' and start 'doing their own thing' I think heck, video games need to start doing that too. What makes a thing engaging/unique is the passion/heart put into it, not the slapped together clone of something.

I've heard mixed things about Rising of Shield hero. Most fans either seem to love the show or hate the protagonist. Sword Art Online I haven't touched due to the hype and...fanbase behind it. I've been wanting to check out the new series of Pokemon without Ash in it, fans seem quite impressed with that one.

I've heard good things about death note, but I've also heard the 'protagonist' is a bit of an idiot. It's on my to do list though.
Cowboy Bebop is also on my to do list.

Video girl is one of those 'no name' animes I expected to be a meme, it actually took it's joke and ran with it, but in a completely different direction than I expected. (It ended up being more wholesome than I thought given the premise)

Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple is also good, but the anime stops right as the actual plot is starting to happen. (In the manga I mean) It left a sour taste on that front but it's absolutely Peak otherwise. The Masters are some of my favorite characters I've encountered. Even the one who's basically a more Tame Master Roshi.

If you like Mechs: Lineberrels of Iron is solid. The protagonist starts off with -1 brain cells but he gets more intelligent as the show progresses.

I don't watch it as much as I used to, but here are some I just can't recommend enough:

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth
A group of people from different walks of life studying and attempting to prove heliocentrism in a society that believes in geocentrism and deems the other heresy. It has 25 episodes and is complete.

Sonny Boy
Right as the summer holidays are about to begin, a group of high schoolers discover that their school is stuck in the middle of a black abyss and that some of them have gotten superpowers. It has 12 episodes and is also complete.

The Apothecary Diaries
Maomao, a teenage girl who's very smart, gets kidnapped from her rural home and is sold off as a servant to the emperor's palace. There, she uses her intelligence to solve mysteries and help others. It currently has 2 24-episode seasons, with a third one and a movie on the way.

100 Meters
A movie that follows Togashi, a boy gifted with a knack for running, as he journeys through the world of 100 meter sprints. Also, the manga its adapted from is by the same person who made the manga of Orb, Uoto.

All of these hold a special place in my heart, especially Sonny Boy and 100 Meters :3

Frieren is absolutely a good show. But it's 50/50 on what kind of 'fan' of the show people are.
I need to find a way to watch it without hoisting the sails.

there are quite a few shorter ones that are quite good.
Tenchi Muyo is fairly short (It's nowhere near as long as say, naruto) and the further series are more Alternate Universes than continuations.
Chobits is Goated for Rom Com's and it's decently short.
OG Zoids is Short ish with only about 4 seasons I think? Been a minute.
Big O is one of the top ten Mech anime for a lot of folks and it's fairly short (Seasons wise)
Asobi Ni Ikku Yo (AKA Cat Planet cuties but the voice acting in the English Dub is horrid) is like 2 and a half seasons and is hilarious.

owo Zatch Bell, you have good taste lol although I did find Zatch himself (The little doll guy?) a bit annoying at the start?
I'd suggest taking a peek at some of the older stuff, in my experience the further back you go (To a point) the better it gets. Even some of the Black and White ones (like the original Astro Boy) hold up pretty good. Cat's Eye is a fairly old one and it's great and has very little of the jokes/humor that 'modern' anime have. It ends on a cliffhanger 'watch the next season' bait (It never got one) but other than that it's good.

OG Dragon Ball I watched later after DBZ is better in my opinion than DBZ but DBZ has a special place in my heart since I grew up watching it (And Yu Yu Hakusho and One Piece) on Toonami. My only complaint about Dragon Ball is that Master Roshi is way more....him than he is in DBZ.

Usually I don't mind characters like him in anime if they're played for comedy, especially if they (more often than not) get their comeuppance (For example Sanji and Brock are fine because most of the time they get instantly punished) but in DB he's a legitimate creepo. I understand Japan has different humor and cultural boundries but even with that, eaugh, when I'm more Tolerant of Jiraya's antics (Naruto) than Master Roshi's you know somethings wrong.

Eh, you have pretty much highlighted my main problem with anime. Master Roshi and Jiraya being the top two examples I usually give. Brock is annoying too, but everything else makes up for it I would say. Roshi and Jiraya get almost entire episodes devoted to their antics.

That's how I was with anime too growing up, I just watched whatever was on toonami growing up.
When I was older I subbed to Crunchy Roll and checked out stuff I otherwise would have missed. I ended up finding some pretty good ones (as mentioned above) too.

Yeah, I've seen MANY anime that have this sort of character. To this day I will never understand why Japan finds it funny (I guess the instant comeuppance is the bit, but still) I tend to not mind them if the character is otherwise likable.

Brock for example, he's pretty much always punished or ignored, so his 'antics' aren't rewarded in any way. And he's a likable guy otherwise. (Even the rest of the crew are like 'oh brother' ) I feel like that sends a better message than Sanji who sometimes IS rewarded. (they cock tease us with a few possible romances for him throughout the show) I like Sanji otherwise (He's one of my favorite of the main crew) but that aspect of him, yeah can we tone it down? I understand the joke, but bro, there's a reason peppe le pew is unpopular.

I'm Torn on Jiraya if I like him or not. He seems like a good guy deep down, and he has some pretty epic moments throughout the show (Everyone gets a chance to aura farm in that series though) but yeah, I can't ignore him being an idiot, especially because he's an old man.

One of the Masters in Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple is a BIT like this, but he's moderately toned down compared to the usual characters. To me he feels like an out of touch old guy trying to get some game. It's been a minute but I don't remember him crossing the 'line' as much as these types usually do.

I tend to discuss with a lot of people who like anime vastly more than I do, so the chances of me missing something are slim. Plus, I do read manga as well.

I usually just fast forward through the scenes. When people talk about 'filler' this is usually what I think of, otherwise I don't agree that filler even exists. I honestly just don't want any romance at all, it's never needed and is always terrible. Early on Jiraya is absolute trash who adds nothing to the story, just like Roshi, both of them don't do anything interesting until way after they are introduced and I'm not even on those parts yet.

At a certain point I'm just like if I want that content, then I will just watch 'adult' entertainment.
