Do you ever wonder 'silly' things about food?

A lot of my silly thoughts are: 'who was the first person to go, man, popcorn's good, time to drench it in caramel and destroy my teeth' or such like
I know I can just google that stuff, and get an answer, but honestly it's more fun to imagine. Cause I know the actual answer is probably more boring than what I imagine.
Like, who was the first person to say 'animals like milk, human = animal, human drink milk'

Also for some reason my brain likes to 'fix' things, not exactly in a completely crazy way.
But like 'could I substitute ham for bacon in this recipe' but I never really try it. Doesn't stop me from thinking it though.

Yes, I do wonder that at times. Like who was the first one to eat a crab. Looks like a spider. And puffy fish...like, it will kill you, but if we do enough trial and error, we can figure this out...

But, someone did. Probably on a dare.

But I dont think on it too hard, I mean, I can surmise the reasons.

Yep I can usually surmise them too.
If I have to look them up to know though, the answers are literally on the internet. Accuracy pending.

Well, I think this one may be less about comparing ourselves to animals and more about...something else? Because, animals don't just drink milk. Baby animals drink milk. Baby humans also drink milk! Naturally—necessarily. So, I think it was maybe more like, "If it is good for babies, maybe we should keep drinking it as adults!" And then they went out and found the animals that would produce it most consistently and easily?

Hmmm... Why did we start building up our lactose tolerance? I'm sure I read about it during my anthropology classes...

See, I also keep in mind that many people have died trying new things and teaching us what things are deadly to consume, so... I think many of our questions can be summed up with, "People are naturally curious (to a fault) and many will try anything once! Also, people are competitive and will do reckless and dangerous things to assert their dominance and ego."

It is humorous for a character to see a weird alien monster and think "Is it edible?" before engaging in life/death struggle, but also practical!

Oysters... Who ever looked at the inside of one of them and thought "I bet that tastes good"?
I can think of a few plants that the first person to do it had to be insane to try.
'gee rubbing this stuff on my cut makes me feel good, I wonder if I roll up the leaves and smoke it'
Also a few fish besides puffer fish.

Like who decided to fry up that one fish that looks super fugly lol (it actually tastes good, but no way anybody knew that before someone ate it)

In Sokka's defense, he was basically high at the time. (Though since avatar is family friendly they don't really say it. Bro was certainly high as a kite in that episode though) that being said, Sokka has the survival instincts of a goldfish even normally so...

One dude made the news for eating a slug on a dare to impress his friends, and getting some disease that killed him for it. That does seem like a guy thing to do.

There was a whole thing from a certain culture about licking a particular species of frog to get high too, I think that made the news as well.

Honestly I think it's pretty interesting to think about. It'd have to be a mix of desperation, making due with what you have available, experimentation and, of course, survivorship bias. You know, once upon a time someone makes a waterskein out of some animal's gut because it holds liquid, stores some mare's milk in it or something, and after some harsh riding they open it up to discover that hey, they've got rudimentary cheese now.

EDIT: I don't actually know if that's how cheese was invented.

1) I recently read about a plant that is used to stun fish to make them easier to catch, which was discovered by accident. I think it was mullein? I think they were just discarding parts of the plant and saw how it was affecting the fish. Could have been the same concept with aloe vera!

2) Honestly, in a fishing society, why the heck not? XD
"Whoa! Look what I caught!" Frisha holds up a fish that sags dearly because it does not belong above a certain water pressure.
"Dang, that thing is ugly!" Collin grimaces.
Frisha and Collin exchange glances.
Frisha and Collin are now grilling the blob fish.

3) I think kids got the idea. Cactus juice = hallucinogenic. XD I honestly thought he was just drunk.

Famine is a great motivator to try stuff that even looks only vaguely edible. Though there are some foods out there that I still find weird. Like those Japanes puffer fish. Someone had to be actively trying to find the edible part in that and a lot of people must have died before they got it right. And I remember reading about a kind of bush tomato in Australia, which has two almost identical varieties. One of which will kill you, but the other can be eating if dried in the sun for a couple of weeks. How do you even begin to figure that out? Why wouldn't you give up after a couple of people died to it?

Fun fact about oysters: they used to be cheap peasant food. And if you look at old recipies, you can find some that include stuff like "add 40 oysters". It's only when marketing got hold of them that they became what they are today...

I'm sure I saw on a history programme there was an island that was made of dumped oyster shells.
Okay it was the Hairy Bikers
Oyster Island

Being drunk has different affect on the mind than cactus juice did though.
Could have been intended to be one, the other, or both. Since they don't really depict 'drunk' people at any point (at least I don't think so, if I remember right. Might have happened in a family friendly way in Korra but definitely not avatar) my teen self just assumed he was either drunk or high lol even though I didn't know what either of those entailed at the time.
