How long is long enough?

End of second draft, it weighed in at a little over 55k words. A small novel but still a novel.

Sounds about like Labyrinth, one of my few longer works.

Original concept was for a tale of around 10,000 - 15,000 words. First draft topped 43,000 words. I decided I'd hack it down to size and get rid of a bunch of pointless fighting and wandering around, but I still needed to develop a few things not really gone into. I figured maybe 25,000 words. Instead, the second draft topped 40,000. I've spent the past few months working on a rewrite, including a necessarily expanded beginning (too much telling, not enough showing) and the current word count is around 65,000 words, bumping it from 'novella' to 'short novel'.

I've also been mentally planning and bouncing ideas around for a sequel of about the same length.

I fully intend to make this into a trilogy, so I've already got the sequels being planned in my tiny mind.
