Havenburg: Super City

After all that dull and complex geography, a look at the principal city in which the action of my story takes place.

Havenburg is one of the largest and proudest cities on Aurah. Straddling several islands at the mouth of the Hartman River, it is the SNV's largest seaport, as well as an important centre of travel, commerce, finance, culture and entertainment.

The heart of the city is Midgreen Island, a mile-high paradise of towering office blocks, straddling row upon row of apartment buildings and the great strip of green that is Midgreen Park. It is linked to the mainland by Creeklyn Suspension Bridge (named after the borough of Creeklyn) and Headland Rail Bridge further north (leading to the borough of Headland City). These two boroughs, like neighboring Jamesburg and Brentburg, provide mid-range housing for Havenburg's citizens, while the suburbs of nearby Shoeham Islands are green, spacious and altogether more opulent. It even sports the popular summer resort of South Eastley. The light rail network links all these sites, passing underground on Midgreen Island, onto elevated platforms in northern and mainland suburbs, and operating as a tram in the suburbs of Shoeham Island.

There are many things one can do while staying in Havenburg. One can take in a play in the Westway theatre district. There are many grand buildings from which one can observe the city's panorama, particularly Exchange Towers in the Bastion Street financial district and a little further north, the Grevy Building. Take the Shoeham Island ferry across the harbour and you can see the old immigration office on Ingress Island, and especially the great copper statue Blessed Freedom Belle straddling Hartman Bay. At the far north end of Midgreen Island is the Bradley Island Amusement Park; one of the best in the country.

Yet the main reason many anthros come to Havenburg is for the supers. No other type of anthro is so feared and yet so loved, and Havenburg has a profusion of them. These mighty beings, endowed with extraordinary powers, patrol the city and prevent crime from escalating. Bus tours show people round the sites of particularly famous battles between super-anthros and their adversaries. Super-spotters come to try and catch one of their heroes pass by and discuss who these individuals might really be. Although anthros with genuine powers, such as Snowstorm and Showdown, have led the way in terms of fame, pluck ordinary anthros such as Kay Pow and The Vagabond are now making a name for themselves despite their relative weaknesses.
