Am I the only Brit?

Robin

Hello (Or Hi),

My name's Robin. I come from England but live in Wales. I'm a psychiatric Nurse by trade but also I've taught English as a foreign language 3 times in Peru. Those visits were the subject matter of my first two books. One is published and the other will be soon. I've just had a foray into 'Flash Fiction' and produced a ScFi/Fantasy novella with all chapters under 250 words, hopefully someone might take it on, who knows?

Best wishes

Robin

Hello and welcome.
There are a few of us Brits here and there at MS [as well as Indians, Americans, Canadians, Brazilians, Dutch and peoples from lot of other places - some of them not real [the places and not the people, I mean]].
Pull up a chair to the fire and join in the craic when you have a mind too.

I'm a Brit Robin although I live in the DR now. I was going to return but since I've been here the UK seems to have gone to pot :(

Thanks for that - Craic (sounds Irish). it's nice to know there are so many different nationalities. I'm having a book published at the moment about living in Peru (which I don't, but i did), but I'm told not to advertise it so I'll keep it a secret so nobody buys it.

Nice to hear from you.

Best Wishes

Hi Robin, from a fellow Brit. I was born in England too, but now live in Scotland. Welcome aboard.

Dear Pauline,

Not a great country to live in at the moment England. However, North Wales is lovely, and so is Scotland. What wouls you think of a novella written in the style of "Flash Fiction?"

Best wishes

Hi cadhaha,

I couldn't agree more. I know this is not a political forum but every day I become more ashamed of England, we've gone from a caring nation to a very cruel one. Anyway, enough of that DR? Germany? I'm at work at the moment at a quiet period. I hope Cameron doesn't see me skiving. I have 3 books completed. One on Amazon but I believe the publisher of that is a robdog. One in the pipeline, being published free from a publisher in Austria. I only get 10% but I enjoy writing and just getting into print will satify me. And a 3rd novella, based on "Flash Fiction", 100 chapters of 250 words or less. I'm not sure what to do with that one yet.
Sorry, this has turned out longer than expected.
Best wishes

You're not the only Brit, no. I wasn't the only Brit when I joined two years ago. We are about a bit. I'm based in Shropshire, so not too far from North Wales (in fact I drove through Wales last weekend to get to Chester; I didn't see the Wales sign, but the Welsh on the signs made it obvious)

Be aware that politics isn't a subject we allow to be discussed on Mythic Scribes. It tends to cause division and often descends into heated arguments. What you've posted will pass, but try to avoid it in future. There are plenty of other places on the internet where discussion of British politics is going on in full force; if you've not heard of the left wing blogger Stavvers before, I recommend you google her - she blogs about feminism, welfare, LGBT activism, the media and more, and hits the nail on the head quite a lot.

If you're only getting 10% of cover price from your book you might want to look into other means of publication for future books. Self publication can have you earning up to 70% of cover price of ebooks depending on where you're selling it and what price you're selling it at; paper books vary. Look into the Publication subforum for more information and discussion on that.

What sort of fantasy do you like to read and write? Do you have a favourite author or five you want to share?

Apologies

Dear Chilari,

Sorry, I will not mention politics again in this thread. I like detective fiction such as Frost, Rebus, wire in the blood, Bosch etc but also SciFi. I've got a collection of Isaac Asimov books. My latest offering which I'm wondering what to do with is called T.DOME (The Destruction Of Mother Earth) which I guess is SciFi/fantasy based on humanity fleeing Earth to a planet that they find is also doomed. It's a "Flash Fiction" novella around 26,000 words, 100 chapters with no chapter more than 250 words. Wife and friends thought it wouldn't work but they say they've been pleasantly surprised.

I don't mind the 10% royalties because I love writing and I came to terms with not being rich a long time ago, and this puiblisher is doing it for free. The book is about teaching and living in Peru with a twist. I introduce some crazy fictional characters to emphasise the peculiarites of the Peruvian's mind set.

Enough for now. Thanks and best wishes.

Robin

Hi Robin,

Sorry that I prompted that post mate. Obviously being a fellow Yorkshireman putting the world to rights over a pint of Tetleys is one of our natural traits ;)

DR = Dominican Republic. I was invalided out of the RN (Royal Navy) after breaking my back and living in this warmer climate helps my mobility a lot. I am almost back to normal, as it were.

I have the luxury of being able to write full time due to my naval pension which means that although I have had nothing published yet I could probably, tentatively, call myself a writer if anyone asks LOL.

I am looking forward to getting a critique/support partner to enable me to take my writing to the next level and help keep me on track. I also do a bit of woodturning when my back allows it to take a break from the blank screen and flashing curser LOL

Hello Robin,

I am not a Brit, but I've also lived in Latin America -- 10 years in Costa Rica, and still have half my life there.

I've been to Peru and very much look forward to reading what you have to say about it. I've always thought Peru would be a great setting for a fantasy novel, as well.

Nice to meet you!

Hello Robin, I was born in North Wales and have since transplanted to England. You've met Teacup? He's about as English as we get, frequent cups of tea, pocket watch, the lot :). Anyway, have fun here.
