One person's observations about what has gone on in the publishing industry overall in the last year or so, focussed primarily on submission trends (their focus):

Some good news, some bad news.

What incentive do I have to pay money for work that isn't necessarily going to be considered? especially if the mag doesn't pay their authors. Translation should be magazine scams are trending, as that's what reading fees are.

Especially when I can just publish my work on my website for free.

I am not a big fan of reading fees for magazines and journals.

Having said that I think the incentive is that some people would suggest their is value to a young career in being published in any journal or magazine. There is virtually no value (career wise) in publishing on your own website.

It is kind of like a painter getting a free showing in a gallery, versus just putting the artwork up on his or her own website.

I do understand why many legitimate journals and magazines charge reading fees. IT is a question of volume, with e-mail and word processors the volume of incoming submissions is unmanageable. So a reading fee can cut down that volume or allow them to pay some folks to sort through those massive numbers of submissions.

I guess I consider my writing part of a larger platform: programming, web development, art gallery, open source code, and so on.
