Anybody around here watch the Anime?

I occasionally watch anime, but for the most part, I like the aesthetic more than the stories. I read more manga. Some in English, and some to help with my language learning. Actually, it's a fun way of doing that.

I think you could also point to most of the Studio Ghibli movies for a lesson on how to do it the right way. They strayed here or there a couple of times I think, but, for the most part, the Studio Ghibli films are beloved and, to my mind, rightfully so.

Before they founded Studio Ghibli, that animation team made a gorgeous adaptation of Anne of Green Gables (Akage no Anne, in Japanese) back in 1979. Really lovely series if anyone is a fan of the book and the Ghibli pastoral style.

Death Note is another good one I would put in there. None of that goofy stuff, almost exactly the opposite in fact. One Punch Man also comes to mind.

Death Note has been on my list but I've heard stories how the 'protagonist' (Technically the antagonist but the show frames him as the protag) is kind of an idiot for other reasons lol

OPM is also on my to do list. Saitama seems like such a mood and I'm curious about how he is in the show.

An idiot? Well, I am not sure that really detracts from any show, I am not even really sure how true that is. As we have already discussed there are much worse things they could be. I have not finished it so I cannot say too much, but, from what I have seen, his biggest fault is that he is easily corrupted, which, again, he could be far worse.

Anime does get better the further back you go. Stuff like the black and white Astro Boy still holds up.

They need to stop 'copying what's good' and start 'doing their own thing' I think heck, video games need to start doing that too. What makes a thing engaging/unique is the passion/heart put into it, not the slapped together clone of something.

I've heard mixed things about Rising of Shield hero. Most fans either seem to love the show or hate the protagonist. Sword Art Online I haven't touched due to the hype and...fanbase behind it. I've been wanting to check out the new series of Pokemon without Ash in it, fans seem quite impressed with that one.

I really disagree tbh and hope anime doesn't go back neccesarrily.

There had been a bunch of amazing anime in the last years. Akane-banashi, The Apothecary Diaries, Jadaagur, Goodbye Lara, Love Through A Prism, Gundam: Witch of Mercury, The Summer Hikaru Died, Orb: Movements of the Earth, Blue Period, etc...

None of these felt like a clone of what's already good.
Yes, Witch of Mercury took inspiration from Utena, but had been its very own thing nonetheless.

There are also a Magic Knight Rayarth remake, I think Pokemon Horizons is the best Pokemon series so far and some more popular ones like Vanitas, Frieren or Dungeon Meshi are also really good.
And Witch Hat Atelier had been amazing!
Although I expected more from Frieren, tbh.

They also adapt more shoujo and josei(-esques) now, which is a great thing.

I'm watching anime since I'm 5 or 6 yos (I'm now 33), therefore my list is huge.
Instead of just naming tons of anime, here is my favorite list: Anilist

Never watched much of Naruto, One Piece or so, but I've seen / watching and reading rn other shounen like Inuyasha and Vanitas and love those

I also love the direction anime takes.
Aside from the generic isekais etc... there are coming out a bunch of amazing anime every season, so I'm not even able to watch everything I would want to.

Also, old anime too had great female main characters, but they had been hidden in various unknown shows and a few mainstream shows.
Now they are more common in mainstream shows as well.
The industry also adapts more, and makes more original, shoujo, josei and shoujosei-esque shows again.

There had been announced a second season for Akatsuki no Yona, finally, šŸ˜ ... and it gets hard talking dawn modern anime when they announce a new Yona season haha.
