Are you planning for the boyfriend and girlfriend to be redeemed together? I can see paths of redemption for each separately being plausible, but doing it together is more than twice as hard (this is just standard 12 Steps reasoning). Not impossible, but damn difficult.
We need a point to root for in the character, but not necessarily the character itself (someone said hang a hat on? yes that). I would think this could be either seeing their potential before the fall or having a reason to root for their redemption outside of liking the character.
Of course, if I was writing this, I would probably have them fall again after the agonizing redemption
but I'm apparently very sadistic to my darlings...
