It just came to my attention that today is International Literacy Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I figure this may be something worth paying attention to. More and more often these days I feel as if literacy is in decline. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this?

I can't say for sure if literacy is on the decline, but interest in reading in general goes up and down. I think there are categories of people:

1. Avid readers-people who read everyday whether it be the newspaper, online news, novels, or whatever
2. Casual readers-people who read when they have time or just to relax
3. Internet surfers-people who read, but almost all of it is on internet sites
4. People who don't read-people who don't read anything, either because they don't want to or because they can't

So for those who can't read, but want to read, there's always hope for them. I believe if you want to do something badly enough, you'll find a way to do it. That said, the best way to increase literacy is to donate books to worthy causes, volunteer at schools, adult learning centers and the like, or donate money to advocates of literacy.
