Realistically, How many people could one guy fight alone?

This actually makes me curious to an unrelated note. Couldn't a hero simply run from their destiny and in doing so become invulnerable long term? Or is it one of those you can't out run it deals.
You can refuse the call, but this is generally considered a bad idea by all involved because Destiny won't be denied. It will find a reluctant Hero, no matter what stands in its way.

I am reminded of Jonah and the whale.

But, I am not sure the story will be very exciting if they do. Maybe I should write about a different hero instead.

All at once?
No. he dueled a few of the top guys and won. They didn't like that so they basically jumped him and he killed a good number of them (heard as low as 3 and as high as 10) and got out of dodge. The myth is it was 70 men who attacked him, but there are no actual written claims of that which I could find.

Title pretty much says it all. I have a group in one of my WIPS that are from a culture with simalar biology to an elf or an especially agile human. This culture grow up in a highly dangerous environment and is prized in other countries as assassins for their cold, relentless, and predatory nature. This culture have a group that are the top combat and covert operations students that become essentially royal guards and function as assassins and spies for the royal family. One of the mains in my books is the former captain of this group and was known for (in keeping with the theme so far) his capacity to kill anyone regardless of their status or appearance, sadistic nature, and ability to take out entire enemy encampments (20-55 men). However, I'm trying to figure out, in a fight how realistic or what ability levels would be required for such if its even feasible?
Terrain is also a major issue. If your MC has good skills and stamina, 20-30 enemies isn't out of realistic possibility, so long as he can use the terrain to never face more than 2 or 3 (but preferably 1) at the same time. On the same note, even masters who are also tournament champions have been taken out by newbie belts who faced him 5 on 1 or higher and had either luck or coordination on their side.
Doesn't have to be straight melee at all the character is an assassin an infiltration specialist so stealth and sabotage seem likely.
In assassination, it depends far more on terrain, but also timing. Most assasins aren't particularly good at combat, having spent time on training other things. There have been reliable instances of a lone killer taking out over 100 people in a single engagement, but again, they never faced more than 2 or 3 people at the same time.

There are several examples in The Witcher books where Geralt is beaten by 5 regular dudes with sticks. He is basically a super-soldier, but Numbers matter a lot.
