Skipping (canon) Character Descriptions in fanfiction...

So, I don't often partake in fanfiction.
But when I do I write in a style that assumes that the reader at minimum knows what the (Canon) characters look like.
Original characters are described exactly one time and never again (unless there's a time skip and puberty hits them like lightning)
I have wondered a few times if this is correct though.

I like fanfic but sometimes authors will ban their prose fanfic and I think that is unfair. You have the big ones: Stephenie Meyer, J.K.Rowling, Robin Hobb, Anne Rice. There is a sober affair with the whole facade but I enjoyed the full length novels written in efforts to mimic exactly what they had.

Less is more when it comes to character descriptions. Just give the readers enough to paint in the rest with their imagination.
