Slightly off topic but how many people here are Mechanical Keyboard Enthusiasts and Home Theatre Enthusiasts?

It might seem that my question has no relevance to writing... but there is a connection which will be apparent from my next two questions.

For those who are Mechanical Keyboard enthusiasts who spent time building their keyboard, do you find that having your own customized keyboard helps you to focus more on your writing? Does it make you want to write everyday? Even if only a sentence?

For those who have an awesome Home Theatre in their homes, do you find that watching movies gives you inspiration for your own books? Say like if you were re-watching The Lord of The Rings or a spaghetti western like Django (1968) (Don't knock it! Spaghetti Westerns are also a bit of a fantasy!) and you get ideas for your own Cowboy inspired fantasy novel? Or if you were watching some Cyberpunk movie, you get inspiration for your own Cyberpunk fantasy?

Would love to know others' thoughts on this. I for one feel having a good mechanical keyboard customised to your likes (lubed switches, balanced stabs and correct keycaps and all) will definitely make you WANT to type everyday. Also having an awesome home theatre where you can get immersed in movies can get your creative juices flowing for your own novel.

Waiting for replies....

I have never had a keyboard that has made me want to type more everyday. For me personally, I am happy with a version of the Dell keyboard that is aged out of the market by now, but still in demand. When I was in IT and stocking keyboards, I always kept these in stock.

On my own desk, I have a keyboard that backlights red. This is one of the earliest ones that would do that, but I tend to type in the dark, so a backlit red keyboard was important to letting me do that. But now there are a lot of back lit keyboards, and they come in all colors. I dont need the other colors. Red is sufficient to show the keys and not ruin my night vision.

I am not sure the value of a 'mechanical keyboard', I think these are the old school IBM type that click when you type on them. I see no extra value in these. I suppose my value on this would have something to do with who blows off who's head in quake. If the mechanical one is giving you the edge, I might switch ;) other wise, suck rockets, you and your clicky keyboard.

I this thread should be split into two or more topics. Mechanical Keyboards have little to do with home theatres.

I would not call my home theatre system --great, but it suffices. I do get plenty of inspiration from many of the movies I've watched, including LOTR, and Django unchained. But I watch a lot of movies. Many still on the silver screen. A friend of mine and I go to an AFI theater somewhat nearby that plays all the oldies. Its a much different experience. I plan to go back when symptom of my cancer fade away and life goes back to normal.

Sorry to hear about your cancer mate. Hope you get better soon. Respect to you for fighting it.

My son says: Generally, he prefers a mechanical keyboard, as they have a higher easy of use quality to them. And when he dives into the weeds, he mentioned a whole lot of advantages they have over membrane keyboards, such as easier to clean, more durable, better tactile feel, and all that. He says, if he was going to type out something like a novel, he would want a mechanical keyboard just for the long term tactile feel. But he's a gamer and does not use one. He says a gaming mouse is way more important than the keyboard in staying competitive. And he would pass on the keyboard for other devices as being important.

I'd say, if my son says it, I believe it, cause I know he is tuned into all of that. What I got from him was, he prefers his current gaming keyboard and the mechanical one he views as one to write college papers on. Too me, it seems he gives a low priority to having one of these for everyday use.

I type like I'm descended from a long and much celebrated lineage of jackhammers. Which is baller for me, rough on my keyboards, so I tend to go through them every 12 - 18 months. This one I'm on now replaced a holder of the new record. That one I'd had since March. Pray for this one. I'm about to go into the drafting phase of our books.

I think that crafted keyboards look like great fun, but given my destructive tendencies I think I'd just break my own heart with my keyboard.

I wouldn't call myself a actual audiophile, but I definitely am a music whore dependent on a rich and diverse collection to write, and with that goes a deep desire to hear my music properly. Coincidentally, my speaker blew out yesterday. Fun! So that replacement should be here tomorrow.

are you getting a DALI / Polk / JBL / Klipsch ?

I just type away on my laptop's keyboard... I know sacrilege and all that. However, my laptop (an HP Spectre) does have a nice clickety-clak keyboard and it gets the job done while I lounge in my comfy chair.
