You could have Cadell blame his actions on being a product of his environment and even have that excuse accepted by some people, but his internal conflict would probably not be resolved from such a petty claim. This leads to the question of whether or not Cadell was aware that torture is not a very nice thing to do or is it simply a matter of course. How much of a sadist he was at the time?
