Xbox One or PS4?

So we have the next "console war" over the horizon. While the Wii U has been out for a while, it's not going to really factor into the battle between the big two, Microsoft and Sony.

From the news that is currently available, the Xbox One is already a big disadvantage in my opinion. They've revealed a number of things that is going to turn off hardcore gamers or even people like me. I'm a gamer, but don't really consider myself hardcore. That said, I buy consoles to play games first and foremost.

Here's what Xbox One has going against it:

1. The "always online" feature. Numerous people have already complained about this element. That basically means you can't play your games if you're out internet range.

2. No used games. Not sure how that's going to pan out.

3. The focus on turning the Xbox One until a "entertainment system" that can do everything instead of a console that plays games.

4. It's been revealed that it will be $499 at launch. Little too steep for me. But I imagine the PS4 will probably be about the same.

Features are still kind of mum about what Sony is going to reveal. Perhaps they're going to follow Microsoft in some of the same areas that some fans have been raving about. Hopefully, we'll get more details soon.

I'll probably wait a while before I get either system anyway (I never buy anything at launch). My next planned purchase is a PS3, but I want to wait until it goes down in price more.

What do you think? Xbox One, PS4, or something else?

"No used games. Not sure how that's going to pan out." Has this been confirmed or is it still just a rumour? I watched some E3 coverage focusing on the Xbox One yesterday and there was no discussion of the no used games rumour.

I do believe the price will hurt Microsoft's sales, it jumped too high too quickly.

Presently I play fantasy rpgs and a couple of adventure games on an Xbox 360 and I'm very happy with the system; I feel no great urge to buy into Xbox One and likely won't until a really good fantasy rpg is released for it.

I'm not sure about trading games, but I'm pretty sure you can't buy used ones. Maybe that's changed.

Sony, in my mind, just put the nail in the coffin. They announced that they are allowing used games and the price is actually 100 dollars cheaper.

I'm also a proud Xbox 360 owner. I love it, but I can't say I'm going to extend any sort of loyalty to the Xbox One.

And yes, 400 dollars would buy a lot of books! :)

1. I'M always online, so no biggie for me.

2. I never buy used games because I don't like scratches. Yes, I am THAT girl. Also, I normally tend to mmorpg online (WoW and SWTOR)

3. I already use my 360 like that - Netflix, music, everything. My dream has always been to have a total media center box that controlled everything from a central location. ATM I use my computer as admin and my 360 as a peripheral.

4. I'm sure the price will drop eventually. I never buy first gen consoles - too many bugs. I'm waiting for them to stabilize the product, so maybe 3 - 4 years.

So, I'm looking forward to what evolves.

The "Always Online" requirement is a detractor for me. It may be it will work out well, but after seeing how it went for Diablo III and the most recent Sim City, I would be reluctant to buy a console requiring me to be online at all times.

1. I think the Diablo III and SimCity deals are what make people sour on this idea. Plus, if the internet goes out or whatever, then you can't play your games. At all. That would suck.

2. I don't think it's just about buying used games. For some they like trading their games in for other games or getting credit. So this could be a deal breaker for a lot of gamers that do like to trade-in.

3. Sure, some people use their Xbox 360's already for other media. But I'm sure most people buy consoles to play games on. And they think that should be the focus. Not to say the Xbox One will be bad, it may very well be awesome. Just focusing on the TV aspect seemed an odd choice.

4. Yeah, I expect that as well. That's why I never buy them when they first come out either.

I hope for the sake of competition that the Xbox One isn't dead in the water like some are already predicting. It'll be interesting to see what comes of all this.

Xbox One will probably sell like ice cream in the sun, but I get the feeling they're getting a lot of bad cred with the "core gamers". There will be call of duty and all that jazz which will pull in big crowds, but as an old fart with little to no interest in that kind of stuff that's not selling it for me.

MS seems to be getting a lot of bad hype from this. Time will tell how much that will affect sales in the long run.

All reports and announcements I've read say that it will play used games, though there is an authentication process that's unrevealed. Also, the system doesn't need to be online all the time, but it apparently must be once every 24 hours (part of that unclear authentication).

I buy nearly all games used, because it's just not worth it to me to pay $60 so I don't have to wait. I made an exception for Skyrim, and I only got that on 360 because my PC is no longer up to spec.

If I buy a XOne or PS4, I will make my decision the same way as last time - I will buy the cheaper system, after confirming that there are decent RPGs for me to play on it. Elder Scrolls and Final Fantasy are must-haves, and I need a few more to make it worthwhile. Lost Odyssey helped me decide the go with Xbox 360.

I still own a Nintendo 64 solely for playing Majora's Mask! lol I also still have the first Xbox to play Jade Empire (yes, I know 360 is backwards compatible but the black and white buttons translate awkwardly) and a Game Cube. I also still have all my games for all my systems because I really do tend to replay them.

I am nerd, hear me squee.

Both systems have similar specs. The advantage falls to the PS4 for the level of integration with mobile devices. You can play your games on the PS Vita, download an app that let's you buy games, download them to your system while away, and view other people gameplay footage.

PS4 offers a share option. You can share your gameplay footage with the world at large. I can see this becoming a new form of entertainment, much like it is in South Korea. People like to watch others play these massive FPS tournaments.

But also remember the Leeroy Jenkins video. It has over 35 million views. There are other ways to modify gameplay footage for the audience at large.

My wife is a hardcore gamer, so we'll likely end up getting both systems eventually.

That being said, I'm personally leaning towards the PS4. This, however, has more to do with the current generation of consoles. We absolutely love our PS3, and use it almost everyday for something.

Also, although the PS4 is winning the public relations battle at the moment, don't write off Microsoft yet. They are a very shrewd company, with draconian business practices, and always find a way to rise to the top... especially if it means destroying their competitors.

They are going to make this tough for Sony no matter what.

Ah, man! I've tried futilely to get my wife to just like video games. After countless failed attempts, the closest thing I get is the sure thing of flat eyes drilling into the back of my head whenever I push the power button for the PS3.

Don't tell me she loves RPGs and MMOs. Seriously, don't.

I preferred the PS3 to the Xbox 360, and I prefer Playstation Plus to Xbox Live. So I'll probably just stick with Playstation, though I doubt I will be able to afford one at launch. Wait it out, maybe get it $50 cheaper in a couple of years. Kingdom Hearts III... that could be a system seller, for me. Definitely something I will be watching. I'm also interested in Destiny, but that looks like it will be getting released on the previous gen as well, so I don't see why I'd get a PS4 just to play it.

Xbox One... mmm, I'm not fond of it, but I'm also a PC gamer, so I've been used to not being able to trade/sell games for years. It's a different market, it has different problems, and the fact that you can trade/sell your games but only through 'participating retailers' sounds like it's going to be a big hit against the small gaming stories that tend to make a living off of used games. Like, Gamestop is going to be the only option for most areas, you know? It's all very corporate. Plus, I don't like Kinect too much, so I'm not sure why I should spend $100 more for this system so I can have that thing bundled in with it. I'm not saying I'll never buy one - eventually, they might have a game good enough to make it worthwhile - but it'd be years down the road, I think.
