Everyone,

Thomas has graciously agreed to answer our questions regarding this project. Some of the top names in publishing are involved in Reedsy, and there's a lot of potential there.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about this endeavor, and ask away.

What's the advantage over self-publishing?

Thanks for your question. There are a few major advantages of Reedsy over other self-publishing platforms. Here are just a couple of them:

Access to experienced and vetted publishing professionals: A major problem with indie-authors currently seeking editors and designers is that it is difficult for them to ensure the quality of the freelancers (especially when there are many thousands to choose from!). Reedsy has done the work for authors by creating an exclusive marketplace only for proven professionals.

Complete financial flexibility: There are no set prices on Reedsy - no set "publishing packages". It is a genuinely flexible marketplace. Authors approach the freelancers they like the look of individually based on their merit. It is not a site where authors "post" work and wait for freelancers to respond, creating a "bid-down" arena. Offers, upfront payments and scheduled payments are negotiable and fully flexible according to an author's needs.

Collaboration tools: Reedsy is the only indie-publishing platforms that will soon provide authors with a suite of collaborative tools. These include cloud-based manuscript storage for version-tracking, backups and centralised queries; price quotes, and messaging access. Indie-publishing is currently a laborious and inefficient process, requiring authors to become project managers. Reedsy's collaboration tools will for the first time provide authors with the ability to easily manage all their editing and design workflow in one place. Once authors have completed their manuscript, they can download the mobi or ePub files and distribute it as they wish.

Reedsy is creating a community through the use of beautiful digital technologies. There are many more developments being outrolled in the near future. Watch this space...

So if I just wanted to use to find editors/cover designers, I could without paying anything more than the editing/designing fees?

Yes, absolutely. It costs you nothing to sign up and you simply need to pay the editors and cover designers the fee you agree.

So Reedsy isn't a publishing company... it's a marketplace/community for literary professionals seeking or offering editorial/design services?

Yes we are currently a marketplace, but we do have future publishing ambitions. Once an author's manuscript is complete, they can choose to self-publish and distribute their books as they wish, or they could apply to publish through Reedsy if they like.

There was a recent Publishers Weekly article about us that should make things a bit clearer: Reedsy Debuts Skills Market, Plans Curated Imprint

Ahoy,

I read the article and I was a bit curious about this part:
Fayet said users will also be able to download manuscripts that are rejected for a fee (likely less than $100 but to be determined) as ePub or Mobi files and self-published through competing platforms, such as Kindle and Nook. The proposed fee, Fayet said, is to pay for Reedsy to convert the manuscripts to downloadable files, but he also noted that the company may allow rejected manuscripts to be downloaded for free as basic ePub files.

Does this apply only to manuscripts created using the collaborative editor, or is it all manuscripts that are submitted?
If I wanted to just copy my actual text I'd written and then do the mobi/epub conversion myself, would I still have to pay for that?

I'm assuming I wouldn't, but I'd rather ask stupid questions than make stupid mistakes.

Overall it sounds like a really cool site and once I get to the stage where I need to hire an editor I'll definitely look into this.

Hi!

I'm really glad you're interested in Reedsy. Yes, anyone using Reedsy can download their basic ePub files for free and format it themselves, or with another service, whether or not they have used the collaborative editor.

The fee will be for authors who want to download fully formatted ePub and mobi and pdf (for printing) files which will be good enough for immediate distribution and publication.

It's completely up to you!

I hope this answers your question. Let me know it it's still unclear.

This answers the question. It's perfectly clear and it's the answer I eventually pieced together myself as the most likely.

Thanks. :)

I was wondering about the publishing service: Would you be wanting first publishing rights for the book? If I've put my book up on wattpad or on my own website earlier - does that make it ineligible the publishing service?

Hi,

Yes this is something we will consider. For the publishing service, we will consider all applications that come through the platform. So, you can have a fully-edited manuscript, complete with cover design and upload it to Reedsy, then apply to 'publish through Reedsy'. (This applies even if it has appeared on your website, or Wattpad).
