As a writer, I'm more interested in the latter because that's where color and texture come from.
There is certainly an appeal in the idea of a crow spirit that is identifiable with a specific locality such as a particular wood or valley. Although if you wish to create a fantasy world in which there is one consistent spiritual mythos, then that would imply that every particular area has its own crow/badger/monkey/elephant spirt. In that sense it becomes a cross cultural phenomena.
