I'm new and need help

Kevin,

From your other posts, it appears that you are new to forums in general. The concept is that there are Forums about a particular subject. For example, this forum is "Writing Questions." Forums are made up of Threads. Each Thread is about a specific topic, say, "Do I need this comma?" or "What are your views on Showing instead of Telling?" Threads are made up of posts. When you hit "reply" inside a thread, you're creating a post.

In general, it's considered a faux pas to start a thread in a forum that doesn't pertain to that forum's subject. Likewise, your posts should relate to the topic of the thread.

The Showcase Forum is where you can post and get feedback about your work. It's generally considered a good idea to comment on other people's work in return.

Does that help?

In answer to your question on reputation in BWFoster's thread, it's a measure of how respected the user is within the forum. You get reputation points if someone either "thanks" your post (see that thumbs up logo with "thanks" written next to it at the bottom of each post? That. You can test it by thanking this post if you want!) or by giving reputation - the six pointed sherrif-badge star next to the Thanks button. The reputation button allows you to make a short anonymous comment to the poster, whereas pressing the Thanks button leaves your name under the post in question saying you've thanked the poster, so anyone can read it.

Repution doesn't really mean much. It's just an arbitrary measure of someone's post quality and popularity in the forum. Those with higher reputations tend to be the longer running members who frequently post threads of comments which other users find particularly useful, informative or helpful, or just funny. Those with a high post count but a low reputation tend to post a lower quality of post, though not necessarily bad - just generally not exceptional. Overall the quality of posts in this forum is generally very good, in my opinion, and the Thanks or Give Reputation buttons are used sparingly for posts that really stand out.

Reputation cannot go down. There's no downvote or unlike button. So really it's about expressing appreciation.

Additionally, because this is a writing forum we ask members to use proper English grammar and spelling where they are able, avoiding modern abbreviations. Please try to use full sentences and correct punctuation when you post.
