Malazan Book of the Fallen - how much am i missing, how much is just obscure?

I've read these books before, but never all in a row. The truth is that there are some paragraphs were I have NO IDEA what he's talking about. Is that on purpose?

Don't ask me... I bought the second one but couldn't get through the first few pages, and I am a dedicated reader, but it seemed turgid and alienatingly male-centric... But there you go.
