Need help with my Angel

Basically heaven was destroyed many many years ago but one angel managed to escape. Now he lives on earth in hiding because if he dies all of heavens remaining power dies with him and demons will have free reign and mankind will be doomed. Since heaven and all but one angel are gone the demons can break free at night but must return when night is gone.

In the near beginning my angel Azol finds a young human girl being chased by demons. He slays them and she asks to go with him for protection. She does not know he is an angel and Azol has lost hope for mankind. But I need to give him a reason for helping her as it is crucial to the plot. He stays in hiding his whole life and never once went out of his way to help man because he has to stay alive. Demons are constantly hunting him. But I can not think of a good reason to make him want to help her and escort her to wherever it is she is trying to go.

He's lost hope and throws in against the demons chasing the girl with the intent of allowing the demons to kill him (a "cop suicide", if you will), but she somehow saves his life during the attack so he either feels obligated to return the favor to protect her, or the act rekindles his faith in humanity, or w/e.

While that is an interesting suggestion I'm afraid it wouldn't work out. I want the two of them to share a close bond and she later on makes him have hope again. They get into an argument because she finds out he is an angel and wonders why he hasn't done anything to help humanity. He says that there isn't any hope and she says basically then why do you continue to run and hide? Why did you save me if there is no hope? I know deep down you believe there is hope and that you still care.

I just can't figure out why he would accompany her and help her travel to wherever it is she is going (haven't gotten that detail figured out yet either) and he can't side with the demons because the demons don't want him on their side. They want nothing more than to kill him so the seals on their realm will break.

Often the simplest ideas are the best. He feels there is something about her and every time he wants to leave her he feels himself draw back to her. He doesn't know why until later when he discovers she is actually pregnant. He finds this out before she even knows. She tells him this is impossible because she has never had sexual relations.

I think you know what I am getting at. :)

Certainly an ambitious answer-- and if you're going to take the "God exists but he lets things happen" theme so far that you open with Heaven destroyed, you might have to go that far for a response. Or if you did want a softpedaled version of it, use some lesser but still cosmic "prophecy" or such.

No I don't want any prophecies and even though I call it heaven it is not supposed to be an exact parallel representation of the real one (my beliefs) so even though there are angels in heaven and demons in Hell this is a fictional work and therefore you won't find me mentioning the name of Jesus or even Satan.

I think I might have it like this: she is being chased by demons. He happens to be nearby and he kills them. She asks if she can come with him but he advises against it. She continues to plea and he eventually allows her to tag along but not promising her safety or ensuring her survival. This kind of implies he doesn't care that much for people because he's basically saying sure you can come with me but I won't promise you I'll protect you.

How does that sound? (and keep in mind she does not yet know he is an angel)

I feel like we can do better!

Why has Azol lost faith in humanity? Maybe he sees something in her that starts changing his mind about humanity?

And I assume allowing her to tag along places him a greater risk than hiding out alone, right? So there has to be something about her that he feels is worth making his struggle to stay alive more difficult.

Maybe she reminds him of a former lover, or a little sister? Or maybe she reminds him of someone he tried to save in the past and failed?

Maybe he somehow discerns there is a greater reason that demons are attacking the girl, that she is somehow special and in need of protection.

You keep contradicting yourself. You say he's lost faith in humans and heavan has been destroyed. So why does he care about staying alive? Why doesn't he off himself and let the humans deal as they will?

Someone who keeps fighting to stay alive so hell doesn't spill over the world doesn't sound like someone who has lost their faith.
First I think you need to figure out your plot and what your Main character is all about. Then everything else will fall into place. Your thought process is working against itself so your ideas are contradicting themselves. Get on the same page and you will fix your problem.

It would make more sense that he's been fighting for so long because he has faith in humanity but this faith is slowly slipping away as he sees humanity turn on each other and turn into the very demons he trying to save them from. This girl who comes out of the shadows and saves him in his darkest hour when he is ready to throw in the towel rekindles his faith in humanity and his strength to fight on. If just one person hasn't yet been corrupted and would sacrifice their own life for another then his fight is a justifiable one.

Even though he has basically copped out of most angelic obligation, there could still be certain oaths he cannot betray or certain types of aid requests that he is unable to refuse.

If you follow the basic definition of what heaven is (in modern religion), you generally accept the idea of heaven as a 'good' entity. Since he seems to be the vessel for heaven's remaining existence, perhaps he has a very strong urge to do good things, even if it is something he consciously recognizes as dangerous, inconvenient, etc. That's how I'd go about it, at least.
