Munchkin Card Game

I heard about this a while back and never got around to playing it. I would like to give it a try or make a game similar to it for my students. I had a lot of success with a card game I made before, but it moves too slowly for my students and they get bored if it's a big group. I'm also hoping to get Munchkin so my wife and I can play it, because I'm always looking for card games we can play together (UNO is the one at the moment).

Has anyone played Munchkin?

I've played it quite a bit.
It can be great fun if you're in the mood for some silliness, but it's not a "serious" game. It's more about having a laugh and messing up for someone else than actually winning. Depending on how the game goes it can take anything from half an hour and up (the brother claims he played a six hour game once).
Technically it can be played with 2 people, but four to six players is preferable.

If you're using it to teach English, keep in mind that there are a lot of puns and pop-culture references to explain. I don't know if this is a bad or a good thing. There may also be a few puns based on incorrectly spelled words.

Either way, if you haven't played it and you're looking for a fun/silly party-game, then go for it.

The puns and such I think would be good teaching tools for students in some ways, but yeah, obviously not too much. I'm thinking of just creating a game similar to it for teaching purposes, maybe to adapt it better to use interesting vocabulary. Not sure. Mostly I'd like to just have something to play with my wife sometimes, so I prefer silly/not serious.

Thanks for the thoughts. I may consider getting it at some point.

I don't know about a teaching aid, but as a game munchkin is a little hit and miss. The cards are fun and silly, especially if you know D&D. That's why we have it, it's funny. But the game mechanics are lacking.

The game my wife and I play a lot is a house-ruled version of Once Upon a Time, mixed with the awesome cards from Story War, to create a cool story-telling game. We've dumped the OUT "endings." You're telling a story about the Story War characters, where the first SW card you play is the Hero and the other person's is the Villain. You play your OUT cards and other SW cards to tell the story, and the first person to run out of cards decides how their character beats the other. It's fun. Our last story had a gremlin break the leprechaun's mithril tux to reveal that he was just a leprauchan in front of the Knight woman he was flirting with.

I have Munchkin Fu and Munchkin Bites. If you like a particular subject, I wholly recomend buying that set because it's hilarious. Like one of the characters for the vampire one is "Angsty Teenager" hahah it's so much fun!

We have the regular game and Conan. But we also got the dragon booster and cracked up when we saw "Smog."

Actually I looked up some about Story War and that sounds like a great game for imaginative people. I may look into that more as it's more open to interpretation than Munchkin seems to be. Although I would like to try Munchkin as well.

You should, the Story War cards are really high quality stuff, with fantastic art and really witty puns. Like the Knight "will fight until your dying breath." And the Zombie is "just looking for a little piece of mind." But the game mechanics are just to explain why your cards would beat the other team's cards, so we use the OUT to make the battle more into a story.
