I've created other races before but nothing like this so I'm really struggling and wanted to ask for some help. It's an early concept but I'm not sure if the race I have in mind will work.
My novel is set on earth in the future where it has been over-taken by a race of beings that came through from another dimension. These beings have no physical form and appear like a mist or ghost-like. They have the ability to invade a living being and control them (including knowing everything they know). The weapons we normally use in warfare have no effect on them so they soon take over and begin enslaving the humans not yet possessed. Their goal is to create a weapon they an use against their enemy of their home planet. On their home planet, those beings have magic and their weapons are different to us. Their enemy is a benevolent being that devised ways to kill, contain and ward them off so they became powerless on their own planet. After an attempted uprising it was decided they should be wiped out all together, Which is why they opened a portal to come to our planet. To escape the stronger race capable of destroying them.
I'm finding it hard to figure out a way they communicate in their true form in order to have made this plan. I was thinking some type of sonar?
How I can make them seem not just evil since they are totally different from humans.
And give them limitations. (if they take over a person and that person dies, say in battle, they leave the body and look for the closet being worth taking over. But we have devised a way to fight them by standing facing the wind. The wind carries them away so they are unable to possess anyone else.)
How they're not extinct beings I have no way for them to procreate. Maybe that's why being the dominant force on a planet is so important to them.
Can anyone help me with this?
