Your favorite Character Backstories

I love when a character's history is revealed, especially when the revelations change how you feel about the character. What are some of your favorite character backstories and how did they affect your opinions of that character?

Mine: Probably Varys from ASOIAF. I won't give spoilers, but his backstory is chilling in a way that made me love and fear him as a character.

Mine is a tie: Durzo Blint, from "Way of Shadows", and Jediah from "The Black Directive"
