Sex, Violence etc in a Teen rated story ?

Most writing sites that allow you to upload fanfiction/original fiction (that I've gone to) just have E/Teen/Mature as a rating.
And I know that Teens/Young Adults are a lot more 'hardy' than they were back then, especially gamers. Even more so for Anime Viewers.
But like where should I (Personally) draw the line ?

A lot of my stories would probably qualify as Teen/Young Adult after trimming down the swears a bit.

But for stuff like how violent I should make them, or how detailed I should make the 'bow chicka wow wow' scenes. I am unsure how detailed to make those.

I just kind of use the movie rating as my guide. Maybe that is getting outdated today....

G-- old Disney
PG -- A good amount of violence
R -- More blood in the violence, and nudity.
X - Bow Chicka Wow wow...
Discarded without consideration -- New Disney ;)

I write in the PG-R rated sections. If someone else has a different rating scale, I am sure I could find my place on it.

Given the generations that grew up with the internet in their rooms and watching stuff that was way not age appropriate, I get that some feel we should move the bar a bit on some items, but... No from me.

That tends to be how I think too.
I've never written anything that would go to R or X
PG 13 is the highest one for me as far as movies go, which is in between PG and R.
Video games are a whole other beast because the reasons for X rating are pretty unclear sometimes.

Heheh...I can feel this thread drifting already....

X is pretty much just nude parts moving parts on screen. But, once in a while there is something that makes it for it its violent or objectionable content. I am having trouble remembering the last one that gained public attention though.

XXX pretty much replaced X along the way. But, once in a while X surfaces up.

Sometimes the rating is just for marketing. I want to be X, so people will really think its over the top.

I'm gonna guess, Natural Born Killers, Devils Rejects, Nymphomaniac, Faces of Death, and I Spit on Your Grave were X rated movies. Maybe Texas Chainsaw Massacre... Strangely, I think the movie X was not....

Well...I considered 'Empire: Southern Heat' to be X-rated, mostly because the final novella, 'Aphrodite Games,' had a lot of nudity and sex. (A few characters were pretty much nude or having sex during most of their scenes.) Reviwers though...one called it a series of 'G-rated seductions.' Another treated it as a crime novel.

That said, the better email newsletter promo sites have questionnaires about everything from language to gore to sex, mostly rated 1-5.

When writing for teenagers keep the violence to street fight in alleyway level rather than sadistic/graphic levels of violence and keep the sex at Mills & Boon/Harlequin level rather than Fifty Shades of Grey or Eyes Wide Shut level.

As for swearing and curse words? My attitude towards swearing in teen fiction is to follow the rule that if it would result in a fine or handcuffs if you use it in the presence of a police officer avoid using it in your teen fiction.

If Sex appears at all in my story I usually 'gloss' over the beginning parts and fade to black. No reason to cover it if it's not a integral part of the story that they porked. Said Porking might come up later as a plot device for the characters involved, but the act itself is best left to the reader's imagination.

I do the same. I avoid curses targeting actual types of people like the plague. I avoid negative words like 'twink' too. Other four letter words are used sparingly even when the situation calls for it, and even then if and ONLY if it's in character. (Some of my characters would make a Scottish Man blush, but I still pair it back to where I'm comfortable with it) Especially in fanfiction where it's either my own version/depiction of a canon character or an original character related to them. I have to think carefully weather this character would swear or not in this situation. Especially if I'm combining the Canon depiction with an Abridged Series depiction, like I am with Dragon Ball Z's Nappa.
